My journey to Ban Bath (Day:6)

At the beginning of the lesson, I did a forging the seams of the monk bowl like yesterday but this shape is called “Hua Sua”(Tiger head-shape). Historically, this shape is the latest style. The age of it is about 30 years. The shape of it is similar to traditional shapes but the base is slightly cut so it can be placed on the floor. Tiger head-shape is quite hard for forging the seam because the corner of its is not curvy like Lime-shape.

My journey to Ban Bath (Day:5)

On this day, I did a forging the seams of the monk bowl but this one is a different shape from the previous one that I did a few days ago. Historically, the Manao shape(Lime-shape) is about 80–90 years. The curve of the monk bowl is similar to a lime. Lime-shape is the one of easiest for forging the seam because it is curvy and so round. Thus, It is not hard to aim and hit the seam in the correct position.

My journey to Ban Bath (Day:3)

On the second day of learning, I have done only one training which is hammering the seams. This task is difficult for the beginner and most students give up this task because it spends power and preciseness for hammering. Before the process of hammering the seams, the monk bowl will be soaked in the tank of water mixed acid. To clean the black stain, which makes difficulty to do hammering, on the seams from a steel welding.

My journey to Ban Bath (Day:1)

To understand clearly about the know-how of crafting monk bowl. I started to do action research by searching and asking each family who still craft monk bowl in the community to teach me. After asking each family, they couldn’t teach me because I wasn’t born there. If they teach me, it will break their tradition. Anyway, I luckily found one master who appreciates to teach me for crafting my monk bowl. My first class will start on 2nd November and it will finish when I complete my monk bowl.
